Lewis Creek Nature Park
Lewis Creek Nature Park is located in Edneyville, North Carolina. A very special feature of the Nature Park is its 6.5-acre mixed Southern Appalachian Mountain Bog. The Southern Appalachian Mountain Bog ?is a critically-endangered wetland ecosystem found in the southeastern United States. Less than 750 acres of mountain bogs and fens are known to exist in North Carolina today, an 83 percent loss from the 5000 acres originally estimated to have existed.? (Source: US Fish and Wildlife Service, Strategic Plan, Appendix A)CMLC purchased the property that forms Lewis Creek Nature Park from Mark Searles in 2004. CMLC was pleased to work with Searles, who developed The Meadows, a conservation-based development that borders the nature park. To read more about how CMLC worked with Searles to protect this property, read our Summer 2005 newsletter article.
The North Carolina Ecosystem Enhancement Program has been contracted to conduct a stream restoration on the portion of Lewis Creek running through the nature park. This restoration is set to be completed in August 2008.
Because of the unique and fragile nature of parts of the nature park, the park is not open to the public. However, CMLC offers opportunities throughout the year for members and the public to visit this park. We offer guided walks every year, which spotlight the many interesting plants found on the property. CMLC also has regular volunteer opportunities at the park, including invasive species removal and tree planting.
